Hello and Welcome to

Desborough Men's Shed

Hello Fellow Desborians

Well from a simple chat between a couple of old blokes back in March last year, our Desborough community set-up a Men’s Shed in November 2016.

The Men’s Shed format started in 1998 in Australia, an idea that is now spreading quickly across the English speaking world.  Places like Ballinfoile  in Ireland, Saskatoon in Canada , Gosport. Hampshire , Kaikoura  in New Zealand and Makua Alii, Hawaii  all have a Men’s shed. Sheds are also popping up in Denmark and Sweden, Desborough is next! All in all there are about 1500 “sheds" worldwide

We are often asked what a Men’s Shed is, and the answer can be long!  But to put it in a rather large nutshell, a Men’s Shed brings men together in one community space to share their skills, have a chat and laugh, and work on practical tasks individually (personal projects) or as a group (for the Shed or community).  And of course, if you don't want to do anything practical, then you can just relax and enjoy doing nothing.

Thanks to grants from the Desborough Community Development Trust, the Maud Elkington Charitable Trust and Desborough Town Council we have enough money in the kitty to operate a “Desborough Shed” for at least 6 Months.  Our shed is an industrial unit located in Tailby’s Yard in the Town Centre, more details and contacts on the following pages

Although the “Desborough Shed” has initial financing in place and will be kitted out with the basic tools we still would appreciate more donations of tools and other workshop items to make the shed “tick”

Prior to the mid-November launch we held a couple of “Pop In” events at Marlow House to get things moving.  The first event on Saturday, 22nd. October had over 25 people completing  the membership form and on Wednesday, 26th. October a further 16 filled in the form.  Potentially, the shed membership has now reached over 50. The lease for the shed has been completed and our legal occupation commenced 1st. November.

Finally, Desborough Men's Shed is now a registered charity, which is great news for us.
